Dishwasher Detergent

I’ve been making my own dishwasher detergent and love it! I tried to access the site that has the recipe, but it is down. Decided I’d better post the recipe as I made it yesterday before I forget it! I copied the picture below from the pin on my Pinterest board.

dishwasher detergent

1 cup borax

1 cup washing soda – Washing soda is made by Arm & Hammer, but it is NOT the same as baking soda!

1/2 cup epsom salt

1/4 cup lemon juice

Combine the dry ingredients, breaking up any clumps. Make sure it is mixed so well so that they will be evenly distributed when made into cubes.

Add the lemon juice. It will foam a little. Mix well.

Press 2 tablespoons into each cube of plastic ice cube trays. Press them down firmly.

Allow to dry all day or overnight. Pop them out & store them in a plastic bag or Rubbermaid. I use Rubbermaid so that they don’t get crushed under the kitchen sink.

If the cube is too big to fit into the auto dispenser of your dishwasher, setting it in the bottom of the dishwasher works just as well.

One recipe makes about 20 cubes. I usually make two batches to fill 3 ice cube trays & last about 6 weeks. When I doubled the batch rather than making 2 separate batches, it started drying out & was more difficult to press firm enough to hold together outside of the tray.

The ice cube trays that I use are exclusively for making detergent! I do not use them for any other purpose as I do not want to take a chance of cleaning products cross contaminating with food or drinks.

  1. Nice, Loree’, thanks! I tried a dry mix before but it didn’t get the dishes clean. I’ll give this one a try.
