Nanny’s Quick Rolls

Nanny’s Quick Rolls, also known as Mayonnaise Rolls, is an old family recipe passed down through at least four generations that I know of, but it could go even further back.

If you are looking for a great tasting roll that is fast and easy to make, my Nanny’s Quick Rolls is the recipe for you! They have great flavor and a texture that is close to a soft biscuit. I usually serve these tasty rolls with soup or stew, but they are great with butter & jelly, too.

Cooking Tip

When baking something sweet that calls for mayonnaise, it is imperative that you use a flavorless mayonnaise. When baking something savory or that will be eaten with a savory dish like soup or stew, a flavorful mayonnaise will give you better results.

What do I mean by flavorful mayonnaise? Flavorful mayonnaise has taste. If you sample it by itself, it has flavor and is not just a white substance that gives moisture, but little else.

Being from the South, my family’s favorite brand of mayonnaise is Duke’s. When we moved west in 2010, we were dismayed to find that grocery stores did not carry it. For the first eight years, I ordered it online and had it shipped to us. Then, one glorious day about two years ago, I found it on our local store’s shelf!

At our church, we enjoy lunch together every Sunday after service. One day, one of the ladies asked why my food tastes better than hers when she uses the same recipe. I replied, “Duke’s. I use Duke’s mayonnaise.” Since she had lived in Denver her entire life and no store in the area carried Duke’s at the time, she had no idea what I was talking about and thought that all mayonnaise was the same. The next time she was at my house, I gave her a smidgeon of Duke’s and she quickly exclaimed, “It has taste! I never knew mayonnaise could have flavor.” I gave her my Nanny’s Quick Rolls recipe and recommended making half a recipe using Duke’s and half using her mayonnaise to do a side by side comparison. She switched to Duke’s!
